RETOUR DES CENDRES
The "Retour des Cendres" or "Return of the Ashes" is the term used to describe the repatriation of Napoleon Bonaparte's mortal remains from the island of St. Helena to France. This event, loaded with symbolism and great national significance, occurred in 1840, almost two decades after Napoleon died in 1821. The process was painstaking and filled with ceremonies designed to restore honor to Napoleon and forge a sense of national unity and pride in France.
Napoleon had been exiled to the remote island of St. Helena by the Allied powers after his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. There he died and was buried. However, as the years passed, the desire to bring his remains back to France grew, especially during the reign of Louis Philippe I.
In 1840, the French government decided to negotiate with the United Kingdom for the repatriation of Napoleon's remains. Once permission was obtained, France sent a naval expedition to St. Helena to retrieve the remains. The frigate chosen for this mission was "La Belle Poule", commanded by Prince de Joinville, son of King Louis Philippe. The expedition arrived at St. Helena in October 1840.
Napoleon's remains were exhumed in the presence of French and British officers and were found to be surprisingly well preserved. After a ceremony, the remains were placed in a coffin specially designed for the occasion and shipped on "La Belle Poule".
